Long time, no tumble/fallflatonfacewithoutgrace. Why had I never given these lads the time of day before? They were on SST, associated with Saccharine Trust, and as an adjective perfectly describe(d) me, even to the point of being initially named “Slovenly Peter”. I don’t know. Sur le Pacifique. Sure.

Slovenly =/= ‘Thinking of Empire’ LP =/= A1

1986 =/= SST =/= SST 067

By the more credible of accounts, “Courtney Love” was one of those funny potential band names thrown about one late evening by (then Portland, Oregon) roommates Lois Maffeo and, of course, the pseudonymed Courtney Love who made it much more famous. Shortly thereafter, the former took it as her band name for her starkly bittersweet duo project headquartered in Olympia. “Sunny Day”, found on this early K 7” and from the band’s first of only a handful of releases, has it all down pat (smooth pun intended): minor key to spare, upbeat vocals delivering downer content deftly (read: sickly sweet), and only the most perfect scant touch of wallofsound overdubbed backups on some of the chorus. If memory is being served, please provide yr sharpest of knives.

Courtney Love … ‘Uncrushworthy’ 7” … A2

1990 … K Records … IPU 12

Haunting lap steel generously applied to “(On a) Hot Day in Mexico” from The Six Parts Seven brothers’ earlier band. I had once contemplated writing to their address to find more but a few years had passed, feared too many for a college town PO box. An early, excellent TMU split-release comp.
